The Road Ahead
Upcoming Slate + Plans
So while I seem to have a decent amount of viewers on this blog – to which in advance I must thank profusely for, last month alone this little blog went from 57 views in a month to 285, a massive milestone in such a short time.
Also huzzah! We finally have a logo! |
As such I cannot thank my readers enough for tuning in and wish I could see your
comments!
While this is laying the ground work for more things to come, I figured I’d give a little rundown of things that I have planned to excuse any potential delays from the usual schedule I try to maintain here – which admittedly, in and of itself has been subject to change due to external factors.
So for starters, I am also a creative at heart, I have been for over a decade trying to gain footing in the voice over industry. Now as any voice actor will tell you, it is a tricky thing to find one’s footing, and I can confirm that, albeit due to many unreasonable circumstances that I do not feel at liberty to discuss here – that said it is something when you are praised by every agency you apply for, only to be turned down for the most superficial of reasons and have said reasons continue to be used almost a decade later.
I have also been trying to speak to local distributors to mixed success on certain items - this is a topic I could delve into someday, but I’d have to prepare for myself as it would be a fairly loaded one – my criticisms for media often come from a place of analysing and trying to be as understandable as possible. However in situations like this, such as commenting on the decline of local investment when it comes to talent and in many cases, playing the backdrop to international productions, it’d probably come off as more a condemnation of bad business practices by those both in charge of certain creative outlets here and agencies that have kneecapped the local talent pool and drive within the country.
As one may have picked up, that is already a strong comment to make and if I
were to do a full breakdown on it, I would want to be fully prepared while
still maintaining a sense of decorum and as such that isn’t on the cards for
now
What is on the cards are a few things that I can go into a bit here without
letting my excitement and fascination on the topics go too in depth too soon.
Firstly, I am currently in the production of the first YouTube video for
Stumblin Media Projector as a means of branching things out and to try and
bring more attention to my things from an analytical, critical and even
showcase my ability as a narrator in the voice over sense. The topic in
question is something I had ideally hoped to have done by 10 March to hit Mar10
but admittedly I don’t know how feasible that is due to external factors I am
currently not open to discuss publicly.
The video itself will cover a topic I had previously alluded to in my introductory
blog – that being the South African Super Mario Bros hack that was released in
the country at some point in the 1980s. I want to thank a contributor of mine
for the donation there to cover the topic.
At first, I could’ve merely put it down as a blog but there were two creative
problems with doing that – the hack itself is pretty simple and there isn’t
that much material one can really get out of it in a text format without me
coming off as trying to critique the original Super Mario Bros game. Not to
mention that there is already a really really good blog post covering this odd
novelty on https://blog.hypn.za.net/2021/01/04/van-der-merwe-en-boetie/

they went above and beyond, right down to ripping the sprites and analysing the code to get any smidgen of information regarding it. Now this has lead to me taking another approach – that is to cover the romhack but in the context of a topic that I haven’t seen any real documentation of or coverage, that being the history of the NES in South Africa. There’s quite an interesting story to be told there and I’ve been for over a week researching different historical accounts that should provide a fascinating tale while also bringing the personality and humor from the blog in video format. I also feel it’d be the perfect experiment to try and kickstart that drive into video making as due to personal issues, and battling certain ailments, it has knocked down the drive a lot in the depressive stressed out sense.

It is a topic I do want to put out and I will see about doing that , putting my focus there.
But that’s on the video end of things, what about the blog?
So I’ve had three potential different ideas for things to cover in the blog, things that may or may not see video renditions in the future depending on how things go. This week alone two interesting developments have popped up, we saw the release of a PC port for Sonic Unleashed which is well worth both giving a review of said port and revisiting the 2008 classic that was once ridiculed.
We also saw the trailer for the CW Powerpuff Girls show leak and this one I am admittedly a little concerned about covering at this point in time – WB have been copyright claiming the trailer on YouTube and other sites and I’m not sure if covering it would be a good idea at this point in time for fear of a potential copyright hit, even if it falls under fair use and commentary laws (freedom of speech and whatnot).
Time will tell on whether I find the landscape safe enough to really give a trailer
commentary on it , but for now I will say this – this is one of the worst
creatively hurtful things I have ever had the misfortune of seeing, and this
comes after knowing what to expect thanks to the script for said pilot being
leaked a few years back. Citing “too camp” as the reason for the cancellation
really…really creates a worrying eye on the blind out of touch with their own
products approach a lot of producers and execs seem to have over their content.
Another thing I had started and was actually supposed to be the first game I properly
covered here was Mickey Mania (or Mickey’s Wild Adventure if you’re playing it
on PS1). The script had been started but at the time of making it, it didn’t
feel like I had quite nailed down the tone I wanted for my stuff, so its been sitting
in word doc purgatory since then. I also feel like this one may work better for
a YouTube video, but that I’ll have to see as I toss the ideas around – I also
feel that I am a bit overdue in covering or reviewing a piece of movie, show,
animated media as well which I do apologize for in advance – it doesn’t help
that over here it is now essentially a slow season for animated features too
and most movie features
I will see Better Man someday…..
Another update to make note of is that while I am attempting to monetize the
blog, I have also officially opened a ko-fi for any support possible to help
keep things going especially during these rough times. While things are getting
started, I want to get into the swing of stuff before I full on dedicate to setting
mile stones, but I am more than fine accepting donations for video or blog
topics to cover as well.
I will have it grow and continue with other avenues too – for example I have a Patreon but I don’t have it set up yet in a way that I feel would entice financial backing.
If you’d like to make a donation I will place my Kofi link below, as mentioned on the page, for those donating to cover a topic, I would be more than happy to credit you as a producer on both the blog posts and the video content as that keeps rolling.
So to sum up, pushing forward to see how this goes and I want to thank people
again for the support in viewership and I hope we keep growing ahead
substantially. Small steps at a time
Thank you once more, and till the next excavation
I wish you the best for things to come! You've got my support.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, got to keep that push going
